Happy New Year! 2018 is going to be fantastic, isn’t it?
I’ve been having so much fun making wood cards this year. What? Are you already confused? Let me catch you up…
These wood greeting cards are made out of 100% REAL wood- hard maple, cherry and walnut, which I cut to 4×6 and sand. Sometimes I find a special wood species, but these three really take the paint, retain the integrity of the wood and are a solid weight. The back is blank so you can write your message in pencil or ball point pen.
Here are some of my favorites:

You can purchase cards directly from Etsy, or reach out to me if you see something you like.
Happy 2018! sari
Kyle wrote a note to our friend, Darryl Rose, who happens to be president and founder of Get Dwell. He wanted “big wood” so he could build a table. I was thinking Darryl would drop off some scrap wood from his home remodeling & repair business, like he’s done in the past, and Kyle would get to work with a hammer & nails and bang something together.
What happened instead? Darryl & Paul Koenig, furniture conservator and creator, drew plans for a mortise & tenon table using handmade pegs instead of screws. Then they invited Kyle to the Winnetka Get Dwell shop to build it himself!
The big wood turned out to be this beautiful table top, made from reclaimed wood.
Thanks, Get Dwell, Paul & Darryl, for this amazing experience.
If you’d like to contact Paul for furniture conservation and restoration, gold leaf repair or custom furniture, you can reach him at 847-772-2720.
Get Dwell & Darryl Rose can be found here.
What do you think Kyle’s going to be for Halloween this year? I’ll give you a hint… it has to do with a tool belt & a Get Dwell t-shirt.
Kyle didn’t come home the other day…well, he eventually got home 30 minutes late. He didn’t get off the school bus at our stop, even though he had all the other days. The bus driver found him quietly sitting in his seat when he checked the bus at the end of the route. He then called the dispatcher, who called me to relay that Kyle was on his way home. The poor bus driver was distraught.
Kyle thought it was hilarious. The bus driver will never forget to tell Kyle to get off the bus & I’ve asked a kid on the bus to remind him where to get off, as well.
Still trying to learn from Kyle that EVERYTHING is a hilarious adventure… Drop a plate? hilarious. Dog pees on the rug? hilarious. Air conditioner is broken on the hottest day of the year? hilarious. Forget to get off the bus & have no idea where you are? hilarious.
I hope you find your day hilarious-

Finally, at this exact moment, all the kids are back to school full-time and I get to paint again!
In case you’ve forgotten, I paint furniture. I almost forgot, too.
Yup, it’s been about 9 months, but Kyle is now back in school full-time after his grueling recovery from hamstring release surgery. So, what was I working on again?
I’m painting this sweet little table with Suzani inspired medallions & trim.
Suzani inspiration.
Suzani fabrics have become popular lately- I’ve seen traditional antique suzanis used on modern pillows, furniture, wall hangings and also reinvented in art and textiles.
This one is felted art by Maryann Quinn.
Mixed media work by Kate Lewis– graphite, acrylic, oil, and pen on canvas.
I, of course, am besotted with the old, faded, handmade, slightly off-kilter originals like these:
and I’m sure their inspiration will turn up in many a painted piece in the future.
My parents bought us a beautiful, shiny new playhouse when I was about 9. It had a door, double-hung, screened windows that opened and shut and it was even carpeted. What did we do? My sisters & I chased each other around it, jumped off the roof, colored it, planted vines on it and did just about everything but play in it.
Instead, we would head into the woods behind our yard and spend hours building our own structures- weird, branch teepees with moss floors, listing every which way and collapsing at the first big wind, at which point we’d just start over.
If only GoldieBlox had been invented way back then!

Can’t wait to see where this company goes in the future- I’m hoping more complex kits, instruction manuals with additional building ideas, more colors, boy figures (how about a little brother sidekick?)… Hey, GoldieBlox, need a layperson consultant?

This is my new favorite commercial. Hope you like it, too.
Yay, Derrick Coleman!
Happy New Year!
